Perry County Therapy Services Now Offers a Therapy Program Specific for Persons with Parkinson’s Disease
Perryville, MO – Perry County Health System (PCHS) now offers a multidisciplinary program to help patients with Parkinson’s disease. The Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) consists of two distinct therapy intervention protocols: LSVT LOUD and LSVT BIG. LSVT LOUD is a speech therapy intervention focusing on improving communication in daily living. LSVT BIG is a physical and occupational therapy intervention focusing on functional movement.
LSVT protocols have been researched and shown to be evidenced-based interventions. These protocols are designed to address motor, sensory, and non-motor symptoms that persons with Parkinson’s disease face. Research has shown persons receiving LSVT have seen improvements in skills such as voice loudness, intonation of speech, walking, and balance. More recently, LSVT LOUD research has shown promise for adults with speech issues arising from stroke or multiple sclerosis and children with cerebral palsy and Down syndrome. In addition, LSVT BIG is now recommended as an intervention for other neurological disorders at the discretion of the patient’s therapist.
LSVT interventions can only be provided by therapists who receive specialized training and certification. PCHS is proud to announce the certification of Kirsti Schremp, MOT, OTR/L; Allison Kell, DPT; and Amber Mayfield, M.A., CCC-SLP. All therapists have completed training as well.
